An agenda motion approved by Italy’s Chamber of Deputies has called into question postal voting for Italians living abroad. The nonbinding measure, presented late December by right-wing Fratelli d’Italia lawmaker Andrea Di Giuseppe, urges the government to revise overseas voting procedures and to require Italians residing outside the country to cast their ballots in person at embassies or consulates.
The opposition has described the move as “a very serious precedent.” “It is a step toward justice for millions of Italians abroad,” Di Giuseppe said. “Voting is sacred. It is the voice of every citizen. And for this very reason, we can no longer accept that, outside national borders, that voice is exposed to doubt, vulnerability and injustice.”
